  Reasons for Setting Kareem Free

A free civilization erodes when its individuals become oblivious as to why it is that particular good rules are good. Why should Abdel Kareem be allowed to speak? Why is freedom of speech important? We launch an invitation to our visitors and associates to contribute to a pro-liberty campaign by giving an answer to this question. For many of us, a list of reasons may be important in a more fundamental way than a list of signatures.

To Kareem's assistance and for a civilization of liberty, we invite you to formulate on CADI's blog (in English, or Romanian) arguments in favor of freedom of speech and continue the list of reasons to setting Kareem free.

International Encouragements for Kareem, the Egyptian student imprisoned for blogging continue. On April 27 CATO, Hands Across the Middle East Support Alliance, Liberte Cherie, Instituto Bruno Leoni, CADI, along with many other organizations and individuals in 11 countries rallied once again from freedom round the world.

Why do some choose to concern themselves with the fate of an Egyptian they will never meet? True, the 22 year old Egyptian is a part of the Free Civilization in a way in which many territorial residents of the West are not. Nonetheless, at the personal level, we are facing the usual dilemma – either they set him free, and then my effort is likely to be redundant, or they don’t, and then my concern is useless. So I’d better go the movies. The problem pops up when I discover that I can take joy in movies such as “300” only if I know that me or some other guy or girl like me do something for Kareem or for someone like him. Without a grain of trust that I rather belong to the good guys’ side, I can’t live the required emotions nor understand the message.

Why should Kareem be set free rather than kept confined? Some are content with saying that freedom of speech is a “fundamental right”, assuming we all know the reasons why it is a fundamental right. Interestingly, the entry 'freedom of speech' in Stanford Encyclopedia is structured around the limits to the right of free speech. And regrettably, the author lives with the impression that the article also contains the arguments in favor of free speech. As a matter of fact, he merely cites J. S. Mill’s conclusions and state that this right is necessary for the “dignity of persons”.
